How to Write Passionate Romantic Songs: How Do I Write My Lyrics?

Tapping into genuine emotion is the key to writing good romantic song lyrics.

  • This means that your best writing will be about the romantic relationships you’ve had.
  • It doesn’t matter if your relationship is new, old, past, present, successful, or a train wreck, any relationship you’ve had can be fodder for your romantic song lyrics.
  • Why? If you write about things you know about, and if you write from the heart, that is when you can forge connections with your audience.

In addition, your song’s point of view makes a difference.

  • While you can make any point of view work, second person perspective is a popular choice, because it’s very intimate.

When writing romantic song lyrics, you need to use detailed imagery.

  • In other words, you need to paint pictures with your words.
  • Rather than just writing the words, “I love you,” describe how that love makes you feel.
  • For example, “Your gentle touch on my face sends a wave of warmth through my soul.”

Also, you can use similes and metaphors.

  • A metaphor is when you compare two things without using the words like or as.
  • The classic example is Shakespeare’s, “Juliet is the sun.”
  • This compares Juliet to the warmth and radiance of the sun.
  • A simile also compares two things, but it uses the word like or as to do it. For example, “Juliet is like the sun.”
  • Notice that the metaphor creates a stronger image.

However, similes are better when it’s not clear whether the image is literal or figurative, as can happen with science fiction and fantasy songs.

How to Write Passionate Romantic Songs: How Do I Write My Melody?

When you compose your melody, your chorus must be strong enough to hook in your listeners.

  • You do this by writing lots of melodies and culling them down to the best of the best.
  • Your verse melody will be lower in pitch than your chorus melody and will have a speechlike quality, as if you’re talking in music. (Your bridge melody will have a similar quality.)
  • Your pre-chorus (a.k.a., lift or climb) will build toward your chorus. However, not all songs have a pre-chorus.
  • Your chorus should have a singable, soaring quality.
  • You do this by having your chorus melody have a higher tessitura than your verse melody. Also, your chorus will often have more sustained notes than your verses.
