How to Have Fun Singing Karaoke Songs: How to Have a Blast!

This article celebrates International Karaoke Day.

  • When a person sings over a recorded song track that has had the vocals removed, that is called karaoke.

There are two basic ways to approach karaoke singing.

  • First, you can loosen up and focus on the performance.
  • Or second, you can try out some of the following singing tips, so that you can improve your vocal chops.
  • Regardless of how you approach Karaoke, be sure to pick songs you love – that mean something to you – because that’ll help bring emotion into your performance.

It’s time to seize the day!

How to Have Fun Singing Karaoke Songs: Just Cut Loose!

First, remember to have fun.

  • After all, karaoke isn’t The Voice, it’s a fun night out with your buds.
  • This means that you don’t have to be perfect.
  • Why? Because it’s most likely no one else will be singing perfectly either, especially if you’re in a place that serves adult beverages.

The second is like the first, relax and don’t take yourself too seriously.

  • Trained musicians perform in a state of relaxed awareness.
  • Why? Because nobody performs well when they’re stiff and tense.
  • Therefore, if you don’t worry about your self-image and instead just go for it, you may surprise yourself.

Third, practice your dance moves.

  • Another way you can relax and let go is to incorporate dance moves into your performance.
  • How you think affects how you perform.
  • Therefore, dancing and using expressive hand motions can help you to loosen up and get into the spirit of the performance.

If you’re self-conscious, your audience will be self-conscious. If you let loose, it gives your audience permission to do the same.

Singing with power.

  • Lay down on your back and breathe in and out while you rest your hand on your tummy.
  • The muscle that makes your tummy rise and fall is called the thoracic diaphragm.
  • It’s this muscle that your body uses to draw in and expel your breath. When you take deep breaths from the gut, it’s this muscle that holds the secret to singing with power.

Warm up before a performance, and make sure to keep your voice hydrated.

Learn how to sing the song’s words.

  • This isn’t just learning the song’s lyrics but also learning how to sing the vowels and consonants correctly.
  • Why? Because your vocal tone and tuning are intimately tied to your vowels.
  • And if you forget to pay attention to your consonants, no one will understand what you’re singing.

In addition, make sure you breathe at phrase endings, sing with a high soft palate, and sing into the mask.

Pick songs that fit your voice.

  • Don’t know what your voice type is? There are many voice types, but they roughly boil down to low voices (e.g., altos and basses) and high voices (e.g., sopranos and tenors).
  • However, it’s more than just the range of notes you can sing. It’s also the quality of your voice and where your vocal sweet spot is.
  • Therefore, if you pick the wrong song, your voice will sound weak, breathy, and thin. Pick the right song and it can make your voice sound strong and full.

How do you pick the right song? Simply try out a bunch of songs and see which ones are comfortable for you to sing.
