How Do Musicians Find Enough Time to Practice Their Instruments #2: The Trick Is…

“How do musicians find enough time to practice their instruments?” The trick is that you don’t have to do your practicing all at once:

  • We know from psychology that it’s much more effective to practice a little bit very often instead of a lot all at once.
  • For example, you’ll get much more out of practicing for 10 minutes 6 days a week than you’ll get from practicing 1 hour just once a week.
  • Even though they equal the same number of minutes the shorter practice sessions will be much more effective.

You can break it up even more than that:

  • If you practice 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the evening, you have 20 minutes of practice for the day.
  • If you have 10-minute sessions in the morning, afternoon, and evening, you’ve got 30 overall minutes of practice, and so on.
  • In fact, breaking your practice time into smaller sub-practice sessions can help you avoid injuries.

How Do Musicians Find Enough Time to Practice Their Instruments #3: Summary

Here’s some final thoughts:

  1. If you can, try to get a little practice time 6 days a week. (If you miss a day of practice, don’t let guilt derail you. Just pick yourself up and get back on track the next day.)
  2. You do this by trying to find 5-to-10-minute blocks in your schedule where you can fit in a micro-practice session.
  3. Then, see if you can fit in more than one micro-practice session per day.
  4. If you do this, you’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ll make.

Have fun practicing!
